FCC may seek broader authority over ISPs

The FCC may ask Congress to allow the agency to collect data on outages of network Internet connections from cable companies and other ISPs in times of emergency, according to Jamie Barnett, chief of the FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau. Under current rules, the FCC can review landline and cellular Internet networks, but has less ability to regulate Internet services provided by "information services" like cable.
