The Amazonian Protection System (Sipam), a government body in Brazil, has revealed plans to invest USD4.9 million to purchase more than one thousand Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) two-way satellite ground stations, covering Amazonia. VSAT deployments are due to begin in the first half of this year it said.
Under the project, 560 VSAT terminals deployed in 2002 will be replaced by new ones. Sipam technical maintenance general coordinator Marcos Bernardini is quoted by BNamericas as saying the new infrastructure will enable public institutions to have access speeds of Mbps compared to the current average of 10kbps.
