The Geneva State administration has recently taken a decision about modernising the operating system in use on the canton’s administration desktops. Installed in 1998 on all the Geneva State working stations, Windows NT has now become old insomuch that Microsoft doesn’t ensure anymore assistance.
In order to take a decision on how to adapt/upgrade a new operating system and office software suites, the Geneva State administration decided to run two surveys in parallel: one on proprietary software (Microsoft Windows and Office) and one on open source software (Linux and Open Office). Included in the New Administrative Platform project (NPA), the 500-page final report presents three solutions.
