Within the context of the first World Internet Day, red.es invited citizens in 13 different areas of Spain to submit historical photos of their region to their nearest ‘telecentre’ – a network set up by the agency to improve access to internet services, in particular for rural populations. Some 1000 photos were received in just 24 hours, providing an important contribution to local historical archives.
The aim was to establish a ‘photoblog’ for each of the 13 centres, to be hosted on the Telecentros network website. Citizens from each area were encouraged to bring photos and historical documents which they felt should be part of the historical archives to their nearest telecentre. The documents were then scanned and placed on the ‘blog’. The initiative should help to make local history much more accessible, even for those people living abroad who will now be able to rediscover their village’s past life through the internet.
