Eurobarometer has conducted a survey on telecommunications services in the EU. According to the results of this survey, nearly one in four EU households have broadband access, with broadband being more popular in households with more than one person: only 12 per cent of single households have it, as compared to 34 per cent of households with four or more people.
Of the households who do not have a broadband connection, 40 per cent said that they do not wish to upgrade, either because they are satisfied with the speed of their dial-up connection or because they do not use the internet enough to justify the higher cost of broadband.
The survey also found that 80 per cent of EU households have mobile phones. Young people are more likely to have a mobile connection and no fixed-line: 58 per cent of single 15-29 year olds only used a mobile phone, compared to six per cent of persons aged 60 and over.
The survey of 25,000 representative households was conducted between 7 December 2005 and 11 January 2006.
