The first phase of Beijing's wireless city programme has been put into operation enabling citizens and travelers to access the Internet in Beijing's urban areas via a wireless network, reports the Chinatechnews.com website. So far Wi-Fi signals cover a total of 100 square kilometres of the city and extend out to its second ring road, third ring road, the CBD area, the financial district and some other areas. According to Chinatechnews.com the first phase aims mainly to serve the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The second phase, expected to be completed by the end of 2009, hopes to provide high speed Internet access within the city's fifth ring road. The third and last phase aims to have the city's rural areas connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.
