Internet freedom out of danger till Jan 2015: Experts

NEW DELHI: There is no need to get scared about losing internet freedom, at least till January 2015. That's the view of top telecom policy watchers, who closely monitored the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that ended in uncertainty earlier this month in Dubai.

Web freedom at a crossroads: The stakes are high

Last week in Dubai, a U.N. conference on global telecommunications put a stark spotlight on a vital issue: protecting Internet freedom and openness. And it showed that in the months and years ahead, the U.S. must continue to confront powerful forces around the world that seek to suppress the free flow of information online and change the Internet as we know it.

WCIT, TPP, Russia PNTR: Growing Recognition of Internet Freedom As A Trade Issue

In December, international negotiators halfway around the world from each other debated provisions that would impact the free flow of information online and trade. The US has pushed for provisions to boost Internet openness in the Trans Pacific Partnership under negotiation in New Zealand. Meanwhile, in Dubai, the US fought against measures to give governments more control over the Internet at the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT).
