This newspaper recently reported on the five most accessible members of the Federal National Council, highlighting those representatives who proactively engage with the public via social media, particularly Twitter. After reviewing this list I started to think about how much influence Twitter has had on the Arab world: for good and for bad, but also how some countries have embraced social media.

For too long, government information has been locked away in agencies, departments, and archaic IT systems. Senior administrators often have to request the data they need to do their jobs from system operators. Elected officials, in turn, often have to request data from these administrators. The public remains in the dark, and when data is released, it appears in the form of inaccessible or incomprehensible facts and figures.

The collection and control of massive amounts of personal data are a source of market power for the biggest players in the global market for internet services, said the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) today. Personal information has become a form of currency to pay for so-called 'free' online services and is a valuable intangible asset for an increasing number of companies doing business in the EU. This requires closer interaction between different regulators.

It’s no surprise that around the globe, governments and businesses were furious about revelations by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden regarding American intelligence snooping on the data of its own citizens. A lot of this has to do with protestations by national leaders whose own intelligence agencies do much the same thing, but with less success than the U.S. National Security Agency.

Since then, we’ve trained and collaborated with hundreds of journalists and bloggers around the world on digital security issues. Together we’ve been learning the lessons of the rapidly-changing technology in the work and craft of journalism. The challenges of staying safe and secure online, while keeping sources and data safe are now the new reality for media workers everywhere.
