Estonian president Kersti Kaljulaid defended her country's practice of online voting, saying in some ways it is even more secure than the traditional way of voting via paper ballots, but warned other countries not to introduce e-voting too quickly.

our city is dumb. The potholed streets, coin-operated parking meters, and drafty brick buildings many of us interact with every day haven’t changed much in a century. But it’s finally happening. From Oslo to San Diego, cities across the globe are installing technology to gather data in the hopes of saving money, becoming cleaner, reducing traffic, and improving urban life. In Digital Trends’ Smart Cities series, we’ll examine how smart cities deal with everything from energy management, to disaster preparedness, to public safety, and what it all means for you.

What is a smart city? Not even the people building them seem to know yet.

Internet users are leaving themselves open to hackers who will access their personal accounts and employer’s systems, resulting in disruption and financial losses.

Security consultants warned that a spate of cyber attacks, including the Wannacry and Petya viruses, has held businesses to ransom.

Among the victims were the Ukrainian central bank and Russian oil giant Rosneft.

If you tried to search for Emma Watson’s Wikpedia page in Iran in 2013, you wouldn’t have been able to find it; the article was one of 963 blocked by the government. This tidbit about the Harry Potter actress is found in a 2013 University of Pennsylvania report on Iran’s censorship of Wikipedia. Researchers at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society recently built on this publication by analyzing censorship of the site in 15 countries since 2014. In a report published in May, they found that censorship of Wikipedia has declined since then due to the site’s new security measures.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as a powerful enabler in many application domains, such as water and energy management, environmental monitoring, health, smart cities, smart industry and supply chain management. The IoT has the potential to address some of the most acute human, economic and environmental needs. It can also directly contribute to achieving the targets in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Accordingly, the emerging IoT paradigm has the potential to create an efficient, effective and secure ecosystem taking advantage of connected devices for managing the major global challenges faced by this, and future generations. In this context, at the 7^th IoT Week, the IoT research and industry community, together with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and other stakeholders, took the opportunity to express their support for researching, developing and leveraging IoT technologies for sustainable development and for building a brighter future for our planet and its inhabitants.
