The historic Portuguese capital has entered into a partnership with NEC to accomplish a new smart city project. With this smart city project, both parties hope to improve the city’s services and ultimately improve citizens’ quality of life. NEC wants to use its Cloud City Operation Center (CCOC) to integrated ten internal systems. These systems are currently being managed by Lisbon’s city government and 30 external systems managed by different project partners.
Installing Smart City Infrastructure in Lisbon
The Japanese IT giant NEC has won the contract to start implementing a smart city infrastructure in Lisbon. The city of Lisbon is one full of history and old infrastructures. However, the city officials want to change the current image of the city. In fact, with the NEC partnership, the city officials aim to boost security and improve the resident’s quality of life. To achieve this, the partnership wants to improve daily operation and coordination of multiple city services.
Furthermore, NEC is aiming to use its Cloud City Operation Center (CCOC). The CCOC is a system that is aimed to be used as the ¨brain¨of the city. This system allows, the local government to have a better understanding of what is happening in their system. In fact, it provides tools to ¨listen¨ and ¨comprehend¨ what is happening all over the city. By having access to this information, local governments can make better decisions and provide the city’s residents with accurate information.
With the use of the CCOC, NEC wants to integrate 10 internal systems that are currently being managed by the Lisbon’s city government. This includes for example city refuse collectors. Furthermore, they also want to integrate 30 external systems. These systems are currently being managed by city partners such as for example firefighters. To enable this, the company is planning to build a Municipal Service Operation Center. With this center, NEC will be able to oversee the entire city.
Improving the City’s Resident’s Life
By having a good overview of all these systems in a central operation center, the city will be able to have a better overview of all the collected information. In fact, with this information, NEC and Lisbon’s local government will be able to provide residents with the right information.
Furthermore, the company will make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and IoT technologies. These technologies will be used for real-time collection and analysis of information from around the city. This will enable the city’s services to respond quickly to daily situations. These situations can involve things as illegally parked cars of suspicious subjects. All the parties involved in these type of situations will be able to receive accurate information at the exact moment they need it.
According to Jorge Maximo, Lisbon City Councillor for Sports, Information Systems, and Citizen Relations:
“In an effort to improve the urban environment as our city’s population increases and the number of tourists rises, Lisbon is striving to better the quality of life and strengthen security. To accelerate the digital transformation of the city as a whole, we will use NEC’s CCOC for cross-integration of environmental data, data from various external entities, data from numerous municipal departmental applications and data collected using IoT devices.”
Conclusion
This recent development is very important for a city as Lisbon. Over the past few years, this historic city has seen an increase in tourism. Furthermore, the municipality of Lisbon has around 545,200 residents and is part of the wider Lisbon metropolitan area. This is the home for more than one in four of the country’s total population.
With the introduction of this smart city project, the local government is able to improve the life of the city’s residents and also the experience of tourists whiles visiting the city. Furthermore, this is also a great development for the city’s capital as it can serve as an example for the rest of the country.
