It has been more than four months since powerful Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico. The storm destroyed Puerto Rico’s power grid and more than 450,000 people are still living without access to electricity. As the island continues to rebuild its infrastructure, smart city technology such as renewable energy and Internet of Things (IoT) will help speed up recovery efforts.
The Smart Cities Council, a network of leading companies and advisors that offers education and funding for smart cities, recently announced Puerto Rico will receive a grant to rebuild its infrastructure using smart and sustainable solutions. With the grant, the Council will help Puerto Rico develop a centralized program for sustainable development that will elevate its economic, social, and environmental outcomes. The program also includes workshops, digital tools and contributed resources from the IT industry.
