A smart city is classified as a place where citizens live well-organized urban life with the help of information and communication technology (ICT) while maintaining sustainability and causing the least harm to the environment. In greater detail, this means living in a city that plans smart infrastructure and urban services to keep them as efficient as possible. Citizens can easily interact with local bodies, thus, playing a larger role in the city’s management.

The construction of Smart Cities is an innovation that is already underway. Yet the technology we need is not in place. While government and corporate policy makers forge ahead with sub-standard technologies, the general public are being set up for more disappointment.

As cities increasingly try to operate in a smarter, more data-driven way, they are confronting a data paradox. On the one hand, cities have more and more terabytes of system-generated data than they know what to do with. On the other hand, they do not have enough of the right data to help them make important policy and budget decisions based on data instead of generalized assumptions. How can this be — how can cities both have too much data and not enough data at the same time?

We need to take a human-centred approach to smart cities, writes Christopher Clements of PwC.
